In 2012 Hernly Associates was called in by the City of Eudora, Kansas, to design a new facility to house their fire department, police department, and municipal court. The sloping site on Main Street near downtown presented several challenges, especially access into the building for fire trucks and through the building for pedestrians. Solutions included minimizing the slope at entrance drives for fire trucks, placing the building on an angle to the street grid, using multiple floor levels, and connecting levels with interior ramps so a standard two-stop elevator could be used. The building design incorporates a pre-engineered steel frame for the primary structure, conventional steel framing and bar joists for the intermediate floor structure, insulated metal-skinned exterior wall panels, and thin-masonry wainscot and corner accents. This economical approach allowed the City to include all of the spaces desired and to stay within the established budget. The resulting building form presents a strong presence at a prominent location.
